Terms of Service

Last updated: 13 July 2026 · Draft — pending legal review before launch.

These Terms govern your use of the Espero apps (iOS, Android, web) and the espero.live service (“Espero”, “we”, “us”). By creating an account or using Espero, you agree to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy and Community Guidelines. If you do not agree, do not use Espero.

1. Who can use Espero

You must be at least 13 years old, or the minimum age of digital consent in your country if higher, and not barred from using the service under applicable law. If you use Espero on behalf of an organisation, you confirm you are authorised to accept these Terms for it.

2. Your account

You sign in with your email address using a one-time code we send you, and you are responsible for keeping access to that email secure. You are responsible for activity on your account. Tell us promptly at security@espero.live if you suspect unauthorised use.

3. What Espero does

Espero is a messenger that translates messages between languages. Messages are translated on our servers, which process the text to do so. Translation is performed by automated systems and may not be perfect — the original message is always available. See the security model.

Espero also offers one-to-one voice and video calls between users. Call audio and video travel directly between the participants' devices, or through an encrypted relay when a direct connection is unavailable, and are not recorded or stored by Espero. Calls are not a translation, interpreting or transcription service unless the app clearly offers such a feature separately.

4. Acceptable use

You agree to follow our Community Guidelines. In short: do not use Espero for anything illegal, harmful, abusive, or infringing, and do not abuse, disrupt or reverse-engineer the service. We may remove content or suspend accounts that violate the Terms or Guidelines, and we have zero tolerance for child sexual abuse material and other illegal content.

5. Your content

You keep ownership of the messages and media you send. You grant us the limited licence needed to operate the service — to transmit, store, and (for cloud chats) process your content to provide its features: for example to transcribe voice notes, describe images, index for search you request, and translate it for the recipients you choose. We do not use your content for advertising and do not sell it.

6. Subscriptions (Espero+)

7. Service changes & availability

We are actively developing Espero; features may change, and some are planned and not yet available. We aim for high availability but do not guarantee uninterrupted service.

8. Termination

You may stop using Espero and delete your account at any time. We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms or the law, or to protect users or the service.

9. Disclaimers & liability

Not an emergency service. Espero — including its voice and video calls — is not a substitute for emergency services and cannot be used to reach emergency numbers (such as 112, 911 or 999). It is not a certified interpreting or relay service. Do not rely on Espero as your only means of communication in an emergency, or where accurate, verified communication is critical (for example medical, legal or safety-critical situations).

Espero is provided “as is”. To the extent permitted by law, we disclaim implied warranties and are not liable for indirect or consequential damages. Nothing in these Terms limits liability that cannot be limited under applicable law (including your mandatory consumer rights in the EU/EEA).

10. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of Finland and the European Union, without prejudice to mandatory consumer-protection rules of your country of residence. [Legal entity, registered address and competent courts to be confirmed before launch.]

11. Changes & contact

We will update these Terms as Espero evolves and note the date above; material changes will be announced in-app. Questions: hello@espero.live.
